NOSPAMIN DROPS

Overview

Nospamin Drop is a medication prescribed for infantile colic.  In a healthy infant, colic is characterized by repeated, protracted, and intense crying or fussiness. Colic episodes typically reach their peak when a baby is around 6 weeks old and start to significantly decrease after 3 to 4 months. While the persistent crying will eventually stop, dealing with colic adds a lot of stress to caring for your newborn baby.

There are actions you can take to possibly lessen the severity and length of colic episodes, reduce your own stress, and increase your confidence in your parent-child relationship.

Symptoms of colic

The following characteristics of colic may occur:

  1. intense crying that resembles screaming or another form of expression of pain
  2. crying without a clear cause, as opposed to crying to indicate hunger or the need for a diaper change
  3. excessive fussiness even after the crying stops
  4. predictable timing, with evenings being a common time for episodes to occur
  5. Discoloration of the face, such as blushing or skin flushing
  6. Body tension, such as arched backs, tense abdomens, pulled-up or stiffened legs, stiffened arms, and clenched fists

After the baby has a bowel movement or passes gas, the symptoms can occasionally become less severe. Gas is probably the result of air being swallowed while crying for a long time.

Causes of colic

Colic’s underlying cause is unknown. There could be a lot of different contributing factors. Even though several causes have been considered, it is challenging for researchers to explain all the significant characteristics, including why it typically starts late in the first month of life, how it differs among infants, why it occurs at particular times of day, and why it resolves on its own in due course.

The following list of potential causes has been examined:

  • incomplete development of the digestive system
  • imbalance of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract
  • food intolerances or allergies
  • feeding too much, too little, or burping infrequently
  • Earlier migraine in children
  • family anxiety or stress

Nospamin Drops contain Homatropine Methyl Bromide as an active ingredient.

The drug homatropine methylbromide is a member of the class of drugs known as antimuscarinics and is a quaternary ammonium muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. The muscarinic acetylcholine receptor mediates various cellular responses, including modulation of potassium channels by G proteins, dissolution of phosphoinositides, and inhibition of adenylate cyclase.

In addition to smooth muscles that respond to acetylcholine but lack cholinergic innervation, homatropine methylbromide also inhibits the muscarinic effects of acetylcholine on structures innervated by postganglionic cholinergic nerves.

The autonomic effector cells of the smooth skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes, and exocrine glands all contain these postganglionic receptor sites. Anticholinergics may have a mildly relaxing effect on the bile ducts and gallbladder, depending on the dose, and they may decrease the gastrointestinal system’s motility and secretory activity as well as the tone of the ureter and urinary bladder.

Homatropine is used to treat intestine issues as well as stomach or duodenal ulcers. It may also be used to prevent nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness. Nospamin Drops work by blocking the chemical acetylcholine. The blood-brain barrier is not crossed by it.
