Description

Oral Rehydration Salts therapy is used in the prevention and treatment of dehydration from acute diarrhoea, cholera, etc.
Indications
Sachet of powder to be diluted in 1 litre of clean water.

Certain types of salts (sodium, chloride, potassium) are needed by your body for many processes, eg, to regulate water in and around cells, for brain function, to aid digestion and to regulate blood pressure. So it is important to replace them if you have become dehydrated.

Oral rehydration salts (ORS) powder are a mixture of electrolytes (salts) and carbohydrates (in the form of sugar) dissolved in water. They are used to replace salts and water that the body loses when you have dehydration caused by gastroenteritis, diarrheas’ or vomiting.
Unlike other fluids you might drink to replace what you have lost, the proportion of salts and sugar in an ORS matches what your body needs to recover.

Commercially-available Oral rehydration salts products like drinks, ice blocks, sachets or effervescent tablets for making solutions can be bought from pharmacies. They are often available in different flavours.
Home-made salt/sugar mixtures are used in developing countries if rehydration drinks are not available, but they have to be made carefully as too much salt can be dangerous.

Duration
As long as diarrhoea and signs of dehydration persist.

Contra-indications, adverse effects, precautions
If the eyelids become puffy during the treatment: stop Oral rehydration salts powder treatment, give plain water then, resume Oral rehydration salts therapy according to Treatment plan A when the puffiness is gone.
If case of vomiting, stop ORS powder for 10 min and then resume at a slower rate (very small, frequent, amounts); do not stop rehydration.
Pregnancy: no contra-indication
Breast-feeding: no contra-indication

Storage of Oral Rehydration salts

– Below 25 °C
Do not use the powder if it has turned into a yellow-brownish sticky substance.
Once prepared, the solution must be used within 24 hours.

ORS is used to treat dehydration. Dehydration happens when your body doesn’t have enough fluids. Not drinking enough fluids or losing fluids faster than you can replace them can both result in dehydration.

Dehydration can be serious. If it’s left untreated, it can lead to life threatening complications, like heat-related emergencies and kidney problems.

Additionally, dehydration can cause potentially dangerous changes in blood pressure which could in turn lead to hypertension.
